As lifestyle newborn photographers, our sessions are storytelling sessions—easy-going, free-flowing, and with the aim of candidly capturing all the love, wonder and excitement that comes with having a new baby in your family. There’s more of a focus on connections and moments over poses and planning. It’s having your own personal portrait photographer for a couple of hours to document your life.

Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve found that in families the photographer role is often played by mom, which is great because it offers an intimate point of view, but then she’s not in many photos because she’s the one behind the camera or cell phone!
Many of those authentic, everyday-life photos with your newborn baby which are so precious and fleeting, like bathing, shushing, kissing, swaddling, changing, snuggling, all the things worth photographing, end up not having mom in them. And this is where we come in. We’ll help to document one of the most profound and amazing times in your life: together, as a family.
Lifestyle sessions can happen whenever you like, but you’ll get slightly different photos depending on when we do it. In the first couple of weeks your baby will spend much more time sleeping, so the photos will be more dreamy and relaxed. Later on they’ll be more alert and aware of what’s happening around them, making it a bit more of an interactive session. We typically recommend that lifestyle sessions happen within the first month.
Newborn photography sessions can take place right in the comfort of your own home or outdoors. At your home, whether it’s a cozy condo or a house, it will be wherever you’re comfortable—typically the master bedroom, the nursery (if present) and living area. And remember, this type of photography is all about authenticity and capturing the everyday, so it’s okay if your home is a bit messy—you just had a baby after all, and it’s okay if your home reflects that. We’ll help to move things around a bit if needed so that nothing is distracting (and we’ll help put them back too!), as we don’t want anything to take attention away from what matters the most—your little one!
Outdoors, it can be in the backyard, during a walk in the park, or any other activity that brings the family together.
We completely understand your concern, as we’ve lived condos ourselves, but there really is no need to worry. We’ve photographed many families in homes and condos of all shapes and sizes and we’ve always been able to capture a variety of photos that have made our families happy.
It’s partly due to the way we shoot – as newborn photographers, we like to capture wider shots as well as tiny details. Because of the kind of cameras we use and our experience, we’re also able to focus in on areas that are important while leaving other areas in the background blurred (it’s called a “shallow depth of field” but that’s the most technical mumbo jumbo you’ll ever hear from us). This removes details and distractions from the background, giving photos a light, airy feeling.
The lifestyle photography session will be all about going with the flow. There will be a mixture of posed and candid photos, but it will be mostly us giving you direction and positioning you so that we can create opportunities for those natural, real connections to happen, and then capturing the results.
If older brothers or sisters are involved, we’ll work with them as much as they’re willing—we know they may get bored or restless so we’ll work around it. Not looking at the camera? Temper tantrums? That’s all okay!
First and foremost, it’s important that everyone feels comfortable in whatever they’re wearing.
For the family: neutrals, pastels, pops of colours (jewelry and accessories work well for this) and textures in light, simple outfits all photograph beautifully. Overall, we’re aiming for a bright and airy look that’s well-coordinated but not where everyone matches. It’s a good idea to avoid clothing with writing or lettering and outfits that are visually busy (for example, mixing too many patterns like plaids and stripes).
For the little one: a few different outfits are okay, and even just a diaper if you like. Onesies, swaddles and blankies are all welcome!
Feel free to send us pictures of your outfits before the session and we will be happy to give you advice.
A newborn portrait session typically lasts one to two hours. Babies have their own schedule sometimes, and we’re used to working on their terms. This also leaves time for feedings, changes and power naps (for the baby!).
We use natural (sunlight) light in all of our newborn photography sessions, for a variety of reasons. One reason is that we want to catch those spontaneous moments that always happen during a shoot, the ones that don’t wait for a flash to be positioned, pointed and adjusted. Another reason is that we much prefer the look that natural light provides, and feel that it’s matches the authentic mood and philosophy of our shoots.
Because we use natural light, the best time for us is whenever the sun is out. During the summer this gives us a lot of flexibility, but during the darker winter months we usually take photos between 9am and 3pm.
We have moved away from offering “posed” newborn sessions. These are the types of photos you may have seen with baby wrapped up and posed in little baby beds or in various positions on a beanbag with props.
Instead, we focus on capturing natural baby photos and connections with the entire family. These sessions can still include photos of baby in wraps, and we’re happy to include any props, swaddles or headbands that moms and dads have.
We’d be honoured if you choose us as the photographers to help you document this amazing time in your life. Just contact us via the contact form and we’ll send you more information and session details.
